Southampton have announced the signing of midfielder Matheus Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon for £12.8m.
The 20-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the St Mary’s Stadium club.
He is a product of the Sporting Lisbon academy, one of the most successful youth academies in the world, having joined from local side Olhanense in 2016.
Over the next eight years, he was promoted to the Portuguese third-tier Sporting B team on a regular basis from the age of 17.
He also has international experience at every youth level for Portugal, from U18 to U21.
Last season, Fernandes spent time on loan at Estoril. Where he made 28 league appearances and helped the team reach their first cup final in 80 years.
“I’m very happy to be here, it’s a dream come true to come to England and play in the Premier League,” Fernandes said.
